18. Generative AI: capabilities and limits

Generative AI learns patterns that can produce new text, images, audio, or code conditioned on input. Language models generate tokens; other systems may use diffusion or different architectures. Generation is not proof of understanding or correctness.

Build applications around verified workflows: define success, provide appropriate context, evaluate outputs, protect personal data, and escalate high-impact decisions to qualified people. Compare quality, latency, memory, safety, and cost together rather than optimizing only a single overlap score.
