16. Put guardrails around every model release
- Before training: verify data permissions, remove secrets, document provenance, and define acceptable-use policies.
- Before release: test harmful-request handling, privacy leakage, bias, hallucination, and prompt-injection resistance.
- At the gateway: authenticate callers, enforce quotas, validate payloads, and screen inputs/outputs under a documented policy.
- For tools: enforce authorization outside the model, use least privilege, validate arguments, and require approval for sensitive actions.
- In operation: monitor failures with privacy-aware logs, version models, and retain rollback and incident-response procedures.
Make this a release gate for each new checkpoint, adapter, or quantized variant. System prompts and safety fine-tuning are useful layers, not a guarantee. A model must never decide its own access permissions, and retrieved documents must remain untrusted data.
